ASSESSMENTS:
The function of a Speech and Language Pathologist is to differentiate among speech, language and communicative disorders and swallowing difficulties. At Tanya Speech Therapy, three types of assessment tools are employed. These include:
1) Standardized Assessments:
Standardized Tests are tests based on a norm reference. Every client needs to answer and follow the Test’s directions in the same way. Then the Evaluator can interpret and score the tests based on the client’s performance relative to others of the same age, that is, the client’s score will be then compared with a group norm using percentile rank.
2) Dynamic Assessments:
The Clinician will pretest the client to gain a knowledge of client’s current performance level without training. Then after the clinician has provided the client’s treatment for an appropriate period of time, the client will be retested to determine the client’s improvement based on the treatment.
3) Curriculum-Based Assessments:
The Clinician will test the client relative to the Language Based Curriculum at school. For example, the Clinician will use the textbooks and/or materials from the classroom to determine the client’s functional language level. Then the Clinician will develop the speech and language goals based on the client’s performance on the curriculum materials.
The Clinician will select the type of assessment based on the client’s /parents/caregivers/and other professionals’ concerns, previous records, interviews, and the clinician’s hypotheses. The assessment period can take between two to three hours depending on the client’s behaviors and compliance. The Assessments will be completed in both English and Thai. However, the report will be written in English only. However, the Speech and Language Pathologist will explain the report in Thai as needed.
